Wetland Restoration

Wetlands serve many functions including water storage and filtration, providing habitat for fish and wildlife, etc.

Currently the Council is focusing on restoration floodplain wetlands and rare wet prairie habitats.  Floodplain wetlands help to ameliorate significant flood events, recharge groundwater, and provide off-channel refugia opportunities for aquatic organisms.  Wet prairie habitats are an extremely rare habitat type due to conversion to agriculture, development, etc., while intact wet prairie habitats are being degraded through invasion of noxious weeds and/or encroaching woody vegetation.  The Council currently is working with partners to restore and manage these rare habitat types.
